Five members of the Sulphur Bluff FFA attended the 82nd National FFA Convention
in Indianapolis Indiana. Allan, Vaughn, Overly, Naylor, and Cummings represented the Sulphur Bluff FFA very well. The week started with an agriculture tour in New Madrid, Missouri with Jeff House, Agronomy Specialist and County Program Director-New Madrid County, Southeast Region. It included a tour of the Delta Center University of Missouri, research fields and equipment. Crops in the area included cotton, soy beans, corn, milo, and sugar cane. The harvest season was delayed due to the abundance of rain that was in the area. This had producers concerned about yields and prices.
In Jonesboro, Missouri, we visited the birthplace of the Lincoln-Douglas debate historical national park. The historical significance of this area was of great interest.
The convention began with a visit to the National FFA Center in Indianapolis, Indiana,
that houses the national staff and historic items of the National FFA Organization.
This was an emotional time for our students to see so many sacrifices made for our country. Students attended the career fair at the convention center. The career fair hosted national companies that were demonstrating new products and recruiting for employees. Universities from across the country were also recruiting for students. The National FFA store had a wide selection of FFA items for purchase. Students had activities such as games, virtual welding, pole climbing, and strength contests.
The students visited the Indiana world war museum. It had facts from every major war
and tributes to the fallen soldiers. For entertainment we attended Dr. Al Snyder, hypnotist, and Toby Keith in concert at the Lucas Oil stadium. Mike Rowe was the keynote speaker at the opening session at the Conseco field house and motivated students to become productive citizens of our society. He had dealt with many interesting characters across our country that were involved with providing important services. He encouraged not only completion of a 40 year degree but also empha-
sized the importance of skilled tradesmen. Later that day students had the opportunity to attend a number of classes on leadership, team building, and chapter development. On our last evening in Indianapolis our students attended Hanna’s Haunted Archers which hosted 6 haunting attractions before heading home. We enjoyed the trip to the National FFA Convention and look forward to attending next
year. |
