free verse = poems that do not follow a specific pattern

hyperbole = obvious exaggeration

idiom = an expression that means something different than what it says

personification = giving human qualities to non-human things

dialogue = conversation between two or more characters

onomatopoeia = the use of words that sound like the actions they represent

haiku = a 3-line nature poem that follows the pattern of 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables

acrostic = a poem formed by the initial letters of a word

figurative language = language that uses figures of speech and cannot be taken literally

rhyme scheme = a pattern of accented and unaccented syllables (EX: ABBC)
